The Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register is a National Quality Register. It has since 1979 registered hip replacement operations in Sweden. One important feature is that all re-operations are registered, making it possible to analyse any complications in detail. Individual patient data such as age, sex, diagnosis, surgical technique and type of implant used are recorded; and since 2002 patient-reported outcome has also been measured, such as pain relief, satisfaction and gain in health-related quality of life. The main job of the Register is continual quality assurance involving activity analysis, clinical quality assurance, clinical improvement work and research with the aim of giving the individual patient the best possible care. Since 2005 hemi-arthroplasties have also been registered. These are inserted mainly in patients who have sustained a femoral neck fracture.
Since 1989 the Register has been supported by the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKL) and Region Västra Götaland. The Board and Steering Group are appointed in consultation with the Swedish Orthopaedic Association. The Board consists of Associate Professor Ola Rolfson, Register Director, MD, PhD, Professor Johan Kärrholm, Director, Scientific Chief, MD, PhD, Associate Professor Cecilia Rogmark, Director (Hemi-arthroplasties), MD, PhD and Professor Henrik Malchau, MD, PhD. The Board is responsible for this web site.
